Fishing

My wife asked me to write a little about mine and Kaiden's weekend of fishing. I told her no, but I guess you can see who won! As I think Shanley has mentioned before I really like to fish for walleyes and compete in walleye tournaments as much as possible. This weekend was the first tourney of the year, so Kaiden and I headed for Chamberlain on Thursday afternoon to prepare for the tournament on Saturday. We pulled up to the boat ramp about 3:30 Thursday afternoon and had our first and biggest fish in the boat at about 4:30, of course I will never hear the end of it that he caught a bigger one than me once again.

Friday morning Bryan Gaikowski (my tourament fishing partner) joined us and we fished all day long with only one keeper so our hopes of doing well in the tournament on Saturday were pretty bleak. Our only hopes were to go back to the spot Kaiden caught the big one on Thursday and hope fish were still in that area. Friday night was the mandatory rules meeting for the tournament and Kaiden made out pretty good again, a few guys appreciated him fishing all day and having so much fun in a sport that has less and less kids enjoying it all the time. They filled his arms full of fishing rods, gift certificates, hats and fishing stories.

Saturday morning came and tournament hours are set from 7:00am to 3:00pm. Kaiden is going to sleep in since he can't fish with us during the tournament and go help with the weigh in starting as soon as teams start coming in which we guessed would be about noon (teams are required to weigh in after they get their limit). But the start of the tournament is delayed because of heavy fog and we don't end up taking off till 10:30am now to weigh in around 6:30pm. So while we are waiting for the fog to clear Kaiden calls and ask what to do with the tray that his room service was delivered on. Man life must be rough two days of fishing, catching the biggest fish, a bunch of gifts, and now room service.

The tournament went much better than we could have hoped for with such a poor performance on Friday's preparation. We went back to Kaiden's spot and caught a fish a little bigger than Kaiden's Thursday fish along with some very nice ones to go along with it. We were about the 25th team to weigh in and we are sitting in 2nd place with 111 more teams behind us yet to weigh in we had our fingers crossed to stay in the top 10. Over all we ended up with the second largest fish in the tournament and a 4th place finish. Even Kaiden was proud of us but figured we would have won if he would have been able to come with. Kaiden helped weigh all 136 teams in and was paid by the tournament directer for his hard work. A weekend I will never forget and I am so thankful that I have a great wife that allows me to fish as much as I do. Kaiden being able to come and enjoy it with me makes it even better.

Yeah, I know it. A lot of butt kissing going on! But I still will have to say that he is a keeper!

Great post! I love to hear stories of dads and their children doing special things. Dawson and Mark are just starting and I pray it continues. I love to see the twinkle in Dawson's eye when his daddy and him are together. Although he'd prefer to be with mommy. Shhhh! Don't tell Mark~

Great post! It's great when you have a Dad who is involved with the children.

My children love when their Daddy spends time with them!
